Cuban state media announced the death of the late Armando Hart, a companion of late Cuban leader Fidel Castro.
Hart died at the age of 87 because of respiratory failure.
Hart served as minister of education and culture for 20 years under Castro, in addition to leading the Cuban Revolution of Literacy Campaign.
Hart, a Marxist intellectual and lawyer, participated in the secret city war and was imprisoned during the last year of the revolution against US-backed dictator Volgencio Batista. He married Heidi Santamaria, one of the heroes of the revolution and one of her most important female figures until 1980.
Hart has also been a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party and the State Council for many years.
In 1997, Hart became Director of the National Center for the Preservation of Memory and José Martí, Cuba's most respected figure, until his death.
