The international coalition is constantly linking its survival in Iraq to threatening threats

    Translated by Hamid Ahmed

US-backed forces in Iraq and Syria have driven out gunmen from more than 97 percent of the territory they occupied, a spokesman for the international coalition against Colonel Dillon said. But he said the terrorist organization was still a major security threat in both countries.
Col. Dillon said at a Pentagon news conference that the United States estimated that less than 3,000 armed militants would remain in Iraq and Syria. Most of them are located in small areas of land still occupied by the organization along the Euphrates River south of the city of Al-Rigga, east of Syria. The rest are in the form of groups in several areas of Iraq that are launching sporadic attacks on Iraqi security forces.
"There is still work ahead to be done," Dillon told reporters at the Pentagon. "When we win, we have to make sure we can not go back."
"As in the case of Iraq, the United States plans to leave part of its forces in Syria for the foreseeable future," said Colonel Dillon.
US troops stationed in Iraq, which has a population of about 5,200, have changed somewhat in recent weeks after Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi announced on Dec. 9 the full victory of a preacher in Iraq.
Col. Dillon said US forces were continuing to train Iraqi forces in dedicated bases across the country, but stopped advising and assisting largely with combat units.
Dillon said, however, that US forces would remain in Iraq as long as they were welcomed by the country's leadership.
The terrorist group continues to pose a threat to Iraq's security. This was demonstrated on Tuesday when a small group of gunmen launched an offensive against Kurdish Peshmerga forces in northern Iraq.
Local reports said a group of 25 armed militants attacked the Peshmerga forces in Makhmour and that at least five armed men were killed when one Peshmerga soldier was killed during the clashes.
Colonel Dillon confirmed the attack, but could not confirm the number of casualties, and denied the participation of any US soldier in this battle.
The attack was at least the second similar attack last week of a small group of armed men who were protesting against the Peshmerga forces in northern Iraq.
Pentagon officials believe that Daqash may become a less centralized organization than terrorist cells spread across Iraq and Syria after the collapse of their alleged rivalry, which spans 34,000 square kilometers in Iraq and Syria in 2014.
Dillon vowed that the United States would continue to support its troop partners in Iraq and Syria until all its armed men were pushed out of its occupied territory and the hunt for their remains in Iraq was completed.
