The Jordanian Ministry of Industry and Trade Yinal Barmawi said Amman had decided to freeze a free trade agreement with Turkey, which came into force in 2011.

According to Barmawi, the free market contributed to the increase in trade balance deficit in favor of the Turkish side.

The decision coincides with a visit by UAE Foreign Minister Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan to Jordan amid strained relations between Abu Dhabi and Ankara.

Barmawi said in a statement to Reuters that Jordan will resume the import of Turkish goods imported customs duties with the entry into force of the decision to stop the free trade agreement between the two countries.

With the entry into force of the Convention in 2011, Jordanian industrial goods have entered the Turkish market free of customs duties.

On the other hand, Turkish goods imported into the Jordanian market were exempted from customs duties gradually and on an eight-year transitional period.

On Monday, the Jordanian cabinet agreed to suspend the free trade agreement with Turkey without specifying the date to begin implementation of the resolution.
