    [ltr]Baghdad - Mawazine News[/ltr]
[ltr]The head of the National Investment Commission in Iraq, Sami Araji, on Monday, Iraq offered an investment opportunity 12 sites in the central and southern provinces and west of the country for foreign and domestic investment, to produce a thousand megawatts of electricity through solar energy as a first stage.[/ltr]
[ltr]"Iraq has succeeded in supplying 1,000 megawatts of solar energy annually," Araji told a news conference in Baghdad attended by Mawazine News.[/ltr]
[ltr]He added that "future plans, including the production of more power through solar panels to reduce dependence on oil, without specifying the size."[/ltr]
[ltr]According to figures from the Iraqi Ministry of Electricity last August, the country produces 15 thousand and 700 megawatts of electricity annually.[/ltr]
[ltr]However, it needs more than 23,000 megawatts of electric power to meet the needs of the population and institutions without interruption.[/ltr]
[ltr]Frequent electricity cuts have been at the top of Iraqis' complaints over the past years, especially in the summer when temperatures in some areas reach 50 degrees Celsius.[/ltr]
[ltr]The power stations and transmission lines have been severely damaged by the fighting in the north and west of the country between Iraqi forces and Da'ash militants over the past three years.[/ltr]
