TEHRAN (Reuters) - Turkey's intelligence chief flew to Washington to meet with US lawmakers and US intelligence officials in an apparent bid to improve relations with the Americans after NATO allies broke down last summer, Turkish sources said.
Hakan Vidan, a close associate of Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan, met with senators to discuss NATO issues and was expected to meet with US intelligence officials later on Friday, according to five sources familiar with the matter, who spoke to Reuters on condition of anonymity .According to a Reuters report translated by «Journal News».
Two sources familiar with the killing of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi at the Saudi consulate in Istanbul were discussed at the meeting with members and staff of the NATO Observer Group, a group of senators from both parties.
But it was not a central theme in the discussions with the senators, and the Turkish side refrained from making it the focus of its meetings, the sources added.
Senior US senators said they wanted to punish Saudi Arabia for the killing, despite President Donald Trump's decision to stand by the old ally.
While the two countries cooperated in Khashoggi's investigation, relations between the United States and Turkey have been strained by disagreements over a number of issues from Syria to Turkey's desire to buy Russian defense systems.
Relations between Ankara and Washington began to improve after American priest Andrew Brunson, who was tried on terrorism charges in Turkey, was released in October.
But NATO allies remain divided on other issues, including US policy in Syria, Ankara's ambition to buy Russian missile defense systems, and Turkey has asked the United States to hand over Fathullah Gulen, a cleric who holds Ankara responsible for organizing a failed coup in 2016. He denies Gulen is involved.
Fidane is expected to discuss the killing of Khashoggi, a columnist in Washington and a critic of Saudi Crown Prince Prince Mohammed bin Salman, in a meeting with US intelligence officials, the sources said. It was not immediately clear whether Fidan would meet with Gina Haskel, director of the CIA.
The CIA estimated with moderate confidence that the Saudi crown prince, the de facto ruler of the kingdom, ordered Khashoggi's death when he visited the consulate on October 2. Saudi Arabia said the prince had no prior knowledge.
Trump questioned the CIA's assessment, saying the agency had not reached a final conclusion. US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said there was no direct evidence linking the prince to murder.
