The city of Babel, known as the "gate of God," according to the meanings of the Akkadian language in central Iraq, has succeeded in taking a place among world heritage, four times since its establishment on the list of failures since the 1980s.
Babel, founded by Hammurabi, the first king of the Babylonian Empire, was known in 1763 BC, in ancient Sumer, between the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers, south of Baghdad.
The city of Babel, where Babylonian civilization dates from 18-6 BC, receives tourists from all over the country and the surrounding area to enjoy its shortness, walk through the corridors of the kings, to its gardens and its maze.
The prominent Iraqi archaeologist, adviser to the Chairman of the Council of the province of Dhi Qar, for tourism and antiquities, Amer Abdul Razzaq, the inclusion of the city of Babylon, on the list of world heritage in the event of the joy of Iraqis, the beginning of this month.
"It is not the first time that the historic city of Babylon has been nominated to vote for its status on the World Heritage List. It is the fourth time since the first candidacy in 1983, to the 1990s and to 2015," said
Abdul Razzaq. But all attempts in previous years were unsuccessful because there were problems and great obstacles put Babylon on the list of rejection.
"He added:" Now everyone has placed assurances for UNESCO, and has also worked throughout this period to meet the demands of UNESCO, to include Babylon on the World Heritage List "He said.
He added that the importance of including the historic city of Babylon on the World Heritage List, within UNESCO's reserves, and each city added to this list, will be a global city within the World Register of World Tourism. This will increase the number of visitors by 20, 30 or 40 times.
He added: "In addition to there will be financial monitoring, from the exploration and maintenance, and restoration by Member States within the UNESCO to take care of the city."
A prominent archaeologist, from southern Iraq, concluded that the historic city of Babylon will receive a global voice for its preservation, development, rehabilitation and attention.
The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has approved the inclusion of Babylon in the World Heritage List on July 5.
Participants at the 43rd World Heritage Conference organized by UNESCO in the Azerbaijani capital of Baku, Friday, July 5, voted unanimously to "include Babylon in the World Heritage List."
