On Monday (April 19, 2021), Agence France-Presse quoted an Iraqi government source and another Western diplomat as saying that a meeting brought together at the beginning of April in Baghdad two high-level delegations from Saudi Arabia and Iran.
The agency stated that "these discussions remained confidential until the British newspaper" Financial Times "revealed them in its Sunday edition.
While Riyadh denied this through its official press, Tehran did not comment on the matter and only emphasized that dialogue with the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia was "always welcome."
An Iraqi government official confirmed to the agency that "a Saudi delegation headed by the intelligence chief Khaled bin Ali Al-Humaidan, and an Iranian delegation headed by officials authorized by the Secretary-General of the Supreme National Security Council, Ali Shamkhani, met in Baghdad at the beginning of this April."
For his part, a Western diplomat said that he "looked at the talks before they happened, and they were presented as aiming to improve relations between Iran and Saudi Arabia."
"On April 9, senior representatives from the two countries began discussions that are currently resuming at a technical level," Adel Bekawan, an analyst at the Institute for Mediterranean and Middle East Studies and Research, told AFP.
The announcement of the meeting in Baghdad comes as Vienna hosts negotiations between Tehran and the major powers aimed at looking for ways to return the United States to the nuclear agreement signed in 2015.
