The Iraqi Ministry of Justice revealed that it had taken accelerated steps to recover the country's frozen funds abroad.
Ministry spokesman Ahmed Laibi said in a statement that Iraq has filed lawsuits against many companies and people outside the country, for their seizure of the frozen funds.
Luaibi pointed out that Iraq does not have statistics on the amount of frozen and unfrozen funds located abroad, as most of these funds have been registered in the names of companies or people since the year two and three.

On Wednesday, the Iraqi Ministry of Justice revealed that it had taken accelerated steps to recover the country's frozen funds abroad, which date back to the era of the late President [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] (1979-2003).
Ministry spokesman Ahmed Laibi told Anadolu Agency that "Iraq has filed lawsuits against many companies and people outside the country, for their seizure of the frozen funds."

Laibi added: "They (entities and individuals) now refuse to hand over the money, even though it belongs to the Iraqi state."
Iraq's funds abroad were frozen after the United Nations imposed stifling economic sanctions on Baghdad, as a result of its invasion of Kuwait in the early nineties of the last century.
Despite the passage of 19 years since the overthrow of the former regime after the occupation of Iraq by the United States and the lifting of sanctions on Iraq, Baghdad is striving to find out the size of those funds and recover them.
Iraq is currently experiencing  [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] caused by the decline in oil revenues and the rise in development expenditures, to rebuild the country, after years of tensions, the most severe of which was between 2014-2017 in the fight against ISIS.
The Iraqi official pointed out that "Iraq does not have statistics on the amount of frozen and unfrozen funds located abroad, since most of these funds are registered in the names of companies or people since the era of Saddam Hussein's regime."

He continued, "Iraq is constantly working through official diplomatic missions around the world to count the frozen funds." He added: "Most of these amounts are in Switzerland and the Scandinavian countries."
During a meeting held yesterday, Tuesday, the Iraqi Minister of Justice, Salar Abdul-Sattar Muhammad, called on the Swiss ambassador to Baghdad, Lucas Jacir, to lift the seizure of the frozen Iraqi funds and return them.
And according to what was quoted in a statement by the minister, "the UN Security Council issued an order to release the sums of money seized in Switzerland, and to hand them over to Iraq as soon as possible."
In addition to the frozen funds, the Iraqi authorities estimate that $150 billion has been smuggled from corruption deals abroad since 2003, according to what Iraqi President [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] on May 23.
