    Al-Najm said during his speech at the workshop held by the ministry in cooperation with the United Nations Population Fund under the slogan (population policies to promote sustainable development), which included the launch of a report on the status of the population in Iraq, pointing to “the high rates of lifespan for the population, as the average age reached Women reach 76 years of age and men 72 years, stressing work to reconsider some development priorities, plans and strategies in general, and population policies in particular, in a manner that is commensurate with the situation of the population and what the new reality imposes on its repercussions.
    He added, "The demographic indicators in Iraq showed a significant acceleration of population growth as a result of the continued high fertility rates, which is reflected in the proportion of the young population and the acceleration of the growth of the labor force, which generates an inability to meet the needs of the population, especially the youth in terms of job opportunities, improving the quality of life and its sustainability to achieve economic growth and development. comprehensive sustainable.
    He explained, "Iraq faces many demographic challenges, the most important of which is the geographically unbalanced population distribution between urban and rural areas and the continuous migration from the countryside to the city due to economic and social conditions, as well as internal displacement as a result of the terrorist occupation of ISIS and the subsequent liberation operations in the governorates of Nineveh, Salah al-Din and Anbar, In addition to the high population growth rates, in addition to the complex health and economic crises resulting from the drop in oil prices and the outbreak of the Corona pandemic.”
    Al-Najm pointed out that "there is another challenge facing Iraq, which is entering the stage of the demographic gift, which the ministry is working to invest in a better way to be a major development engine."
    He continued by saying that "Iraq has not witnessed a population census since 1997, but the estimates of the Central Statistical Organization indicate that the population exceeded 40 million people by the end of last year," noting "the trend towards applying mechanisms based on continuous monitoring of the developmental reality in general and the social and demographic reality in particular, And that there are many policies, strategies and clear plans to study, analyze and develop solutions to the problems, including the National Youth Strategy in Iraq (2014-2020), the preparation of the national plan to return the displaced to their liberated areas of origin, the family planning strategy, the spacing of births, and the integration of the population dimension into the national development plan and Iraq’s vision 2030 and a document The response and plan for recovery from the impact of the Corona pandemic and the inclusion of some population indicators in the first and second voluntary reports in Iraq.
    For her part, the resident representative of the United Nations Population Fund, Rita Columbia, said in her speech that "the report on the status of population in Iraq is the first step towards integrating Iraqi development policies," noting that "60 percent of the population in Iraq is young people."
    She added, "This percentage shows that 57% of the population is able to contribute effectively to the economic development of the country, and it is possible to achieve effective sustainable development for the state through rights-based and gender-sensitive population policies."
    She added that "the main objective of this report is to assess the demographic gaps that have occurred since the adoption of the population policy in 2014," stressing that "the demographic situation and population expectations must be taken into account in national and sectoral development policies."
