The Ministry of Trade is close to opening new shopping centers in Baghdad that operate according to the "hypermarket" system, competing with the private sector and subsidized by up to 20% of the local market.
The "hypermarket" project includes the sale of food, consumer and household goods, electrical and electronic appliances, as well as the sale of meat, with the presence of bakeries, pharmacies and other supplies.
At the same time, economic experts believe that this step will be a real guarantee for the stability of commodity prices in local markets, by providing various materials to citizens, indicating that it will be a firewall against the greed of some merchants.
Economic expert Dr. Adnan Bahiya told Al-Sabah: “Opening hypermarket windows is an important step in the right direction, and a successful experiment, especially since the citizen’s purchasing power has increased and his trends and tastes have diversified to include multiple aspects,” explaining that “it is a successful strategic project, provided that the materials are imported from world-class origins known for their quality. Thus, it will constitute an important leap for the citizen by getting rid of the goods offered in the market with poor origins, provided that this offer is accompanied by appropriate prices and simple benefits in a way that maintains the market price level for citizens with limited income.”
Bahiya added that “opening shopping centers will stimulate the local market and the private sector to produce goods with world-class qualities and features, with the necessity of ensuring their display in these markets, which increases the movement of the market and trade in the country,” noting that “the incentives will not only be on the material level, but will also include the moral aspect at the same time, through the comfort of shopping and obtaining supplies, in addition to reducing the movement of wheels and congestion in other markets.”
At the same time, he stressed the importance of educating shoppers to maintain the cleanliness of markets, choose appropriate goods, and use modern technologies in payment using electronic payment cards, which raises the citizen's understanding and sense of the importance of technical development, similar to neighboring countries that have used such methods to provide services, in addition to maintaining the balance of supply and demand and maintaining prices, which reduces inflation and monopoly rates by some merchants. For his part, the researcher in economic affairs, Imad Al-Muhammadawi, expected to "Al-Sabah" that the turnout for the shopping centers that are expected to open soon will be very large, as they will contain several products, at prices subsidized by the state.
He pointed out that the benefit will not only be for the consumer, but also for the hypermarket, through the constant and regular visits of families and customers to buy household consumer goods, and increasing sales opportunities and achieving fixed revenues for the shopping center, by studying the market situation and meeting its needs, especially on seasonal occasions. He noted that technological progress will give the project greater sales opportunities through electronic shopping, after gaining a good reputation for the displayed materials and providing delivery service to the center's visitors, explaining that opening the center will serve the youth category with the solutions it carries to the problem of unemployment and the unemployed.
Meanwhile, the spokesman for the Ministry of Trade, Mohammed Hanoun, explained that "the idea of establishing shopping centers is a strategic step aimed at enhancing competition between the private and public sectors and contributing to creating a balanced commercial environment that works to combat the phenomenon of rising prices in local markets, in addition to its contribution to traders and importers rethinking prices, due to the existence of a government-supported alternative."
Hanoun added that "the centers that will open soon are the shopping center in Dabash and another in Rusafa, and the Imam Ali Complex in the Jamila area, which are affiliated with the General Company for Foodstuffs Trading, which previously worked in these centers in a step to contribute to stabilizing food prices. It will also open the markets of Hay Al-Amel and Al-Salihiya, which are part of the work of the General Company for Central Markets."
He explained that "the ministry's future plan is to expand the construction of shopping centers (hypermarkets) in all Iraqi governorates, and there are ongoing technical and administrative procedures to build new centers in the same way that shopping centers were built in Baghdad." Hanoun pointed out that "these centers will work to provide other materials sold in convenient installments to important segments of society, including families of social care, employees, families of martyrs, and all those who own a (K-Card) card."
