The Sadrist bloc, which won the most parliamentary seats, among the forces participating in the general elections, pledged to work "to protect the unity of the people, and to take all legal and political steps to protect Iraq's independence, sovereignty and dignity."
The bloc's spokesman, Haider Al-Haddad, said in his first speech since the election results were announced last week, that his bloc, backed by the leader of the Sadrist movement Muqtada al-Sadr, declares its acceptance of the results announced by the commission "in a spirit of responsibility."
He added, "As the largest winning bloc according to the law of the Commission, we make it clear that this big victory came under the auspices and supervision of (the leader of the Sadrist movement) Muqtada al-Sadr, his wise guidance and the efforts of the Iraqi masses in general, and the Sadrist movement in particular, which voted for the Sadrist bloc."
Al-Haddad continued: "We declare that we will be under his leadership and will spare no effort for the success of his reform project, and we will work with every effort to protect the rights of this people and defend their supreme interests, and we will be of assistance to all Iraqis of all stripes, orientations and affiliations, because of our absolute belief in the need to preserve the unity and cohesion of this people and support His conscious national stances, and we will take all legal, constitutional and political steps and measures to protect Iraq’s independence, sovereignty and dignity in order to enjoy security and peace throughout our beloved Iraq.” Ended 29/87
