{Umniah: Al Furat News} A senior official in the US Department of Defense (the Pentagon) confirmed that the non-combat US forces remaining in Iraq have the ability to defend themselves in the face of any attack of any kind they are exposed to, whether through missiles or marches from ISIS or any party other.
The official added in a press statement, "The US forces still possess various types of weapons and equipment."
He pointed out that there was no troop withdrawal, only the mission of the 2,500 soldiers present there was changed from a combat mission to an advisory, assistance and empowerment mission.
The official stressed that what may happen in the future is a routine replacement of some units, which is coordinated and scheduled in advance.
On Thursday, the Pentagon announced that there is no longer a presence of US combat forces in Iraq, coinciding with the international coalition forces confirming the end of their combat missions and their transformation into training and advisory missions.
"The remaining US forces in Iraq will be tasked with providing advice, assistance, and enabling Iraqi forces to defeat ISIS, starting from the ninth of December," Pentagon spokeswoman Jessica McNulty said in a press statement.
McNulty added that the "tremendous progress" made by the Iraqi security forces, including the Kurdish Peshmerga, "helped to accelerate the conclusion of the coalition's combat missions."
"There is no fundamental change to the number of troops in Iraq, the number that will remain there in the range of 2,500," Pentagon spokesman John Kirby said at a press conference Thursday.
Kirby stressed that "the duration of the new coalition mission of advice and assistance depends on the request of the Iraqi government and is determined in consultation with Baghdad.
And the commander of the US Central Command, General Frank McKenzie, said in a press interview: "We will keep 2,500 soldiers in Iraq and warn of an increase in terrorist attacks," noting that "the escalation of violence against American and Iraqi forces may continue during the current month."
"Armed groups want all of our forces to leave Iraq, but we wouldn't leave," McKenzie added. "We withdrew from bases we didn't need in Iraq and made it difficult to reach us."
The US general stressed that "ISIS will remain a threat in Iraq and will continue to reconstitute itself, perhaps under a different name."
The Joint Operations Command quickly denied McKenzie's statements that American combat forces will remain after the end of this year, 2021.
And she said in a statement that {Euphrates News} received a copy of it: "We confirm that the combat forces of the international coalition will leave Iraq completely before the end of this month, and we deny what was issued by some media outlets regarding the survival of these forces."
