Today, Tuesday, the Ministry of Agriculture announced its move to increase the share of Diyala's irrigation orchards, while it made two recommendations to resources regarding the summer plan and to the Federal Court on food smuggling through border crossings.
Ministry spokesman Hamid Al-Nayef said in a statement to the official agency, followed by the news agency, that "Diyala governorate suffers from a lack of water, and this has had a negative impact on many farmers," noting that "the Ministry of Agriculture provides logistical support to farmers, but many farmers are reluctant to Agriculture due to the lack of strong support for fertilizers and pesticides.
He pointed out that "there are old and unfruitful orchards in the province, as well as orchards of oranges and others, which are supported by the ministry and take its water share," pointing at the same time that "there are agricultural problems in Diyala province, because some orchards are located within areas exposed to terrorist operations sometimes." .
He added that "the ministry is working to support the orchards in the governorate, granting them fundamentalist approvals, as well as increasing their irrigation share," noting that "the farmers live in a difficult situation currently, due to the lack of loans and support for fertilizers and pesticides, in addition to the delay in their financial dues until the approval of the budget law. ".
He noted that "the Ministry of Agriculture is waiting for the results of its negotiations with the Ministry of Water Resources in order to prepare a summer plan, because the date of the summer plan will be in next March, while the Ministry of Water Resources has not disclosed the quantities of water," stressing that "it has become an obligation on the Ministry of Water Resources." To disclose the quantities of water two months before the preparation of the agricultural plan, so that the farmers do not lose large sums of money and will not be able to cultivate their lands afterwards due to the lack of water.
On the other hand, Al-Nayef pointed out that "most of the border crossings are not controlled, which led to flooding the market with imported materials such as eggs, chicken and others, while there is a local product that is subjected to a major setback," noting that "poultry producers suffer from the policy of market dumping with imported products." Because many crossings, especially northern Iraq, are open, making smuggling operations take place on a large scale and negatively affect the local product.
The ministry's spokesman stressed the importance of "joining efforts and making connections in the southern, central and northern regions of the country to curb smuggling operations," expressing his hope that "the Federal Court will issue a decision regarding border crossings, as it issued a decision regarding oil."
