Erbil (Kurdistan 24) - The ministers of the Arab Ministerial Contact Group offered to mediate to resolve the crisis between Russia and Ukraine, according to a statement by the Iraqi Foreign Ministry.
Ministers of the Contact Group on the Crisis in Ukraine, headed by Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry, held a meeting with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov in Moscow, "in the context of an Arab effort approved by the League's Ministerial Council last month to contribute to efforts to resolve the crisis."
The contact group includes the membership of the Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, Ahmed Aboul Gheit, and the foreign ministers of Iraq, Fouad Hussein, Jordan's Ayman Safadi, Algeria's Ramtane Lamamra, and Sudan's Ali Al-Sadiq.
Shoukry told reporters in Moscow that the contact group stressed, during its talks in Russia, the importance of facilitating the exit of Arab communities in conflict areas and ensuring that the conflict does not affect other countries, calling for "stopping the war and resorting to peaceful solutions in the Ukrainian crisis."
The Iraqi Foreign Ministry statement stated that the two sides held in-depth talks on efforts to cease fire and reach an agreement to resolve the crisis and restore peace and security.
The Arab delegation affirmed that it is carrying out this endeavor in the interest of security and peace, and based on the distinguished relations that link Arab countries with Russia and Ukraine, according to the statement.
The two sides also discussed "expanded and frank dialogues on efforts to end the crisis and its security, political, humanitarian and economic repercussions."
The Arab delegation expressed concern about the repercussions of the crisis and the danger of its continuation, and stressed its support for the course of direct negotiations between the Russian and Ukrainian sides, and its readiness to carry out mediation efforts to support this path with the aim of reaching a cessation of military operations, in preparation for a sustainable political solution to the crisis.
Sergey Lavrov briefed the Arab delegation on the developments in the ongoing talks to achieve a Russian-Ukrainian agreement, and presented the Russian position regarding the crisis, its developments and prospects for resolving it.
The Arab League Council formed this Arab Liaison Committee in its regular session last month, based on a proposal submitted by Egypt. The committee agreed to preside over a periodic basis to be chaired by the Egyptian Foreign Minister for the current month, after which it will be transferred periodically to its members. The committee agreed that Algeria would assume the chairmanship of the committee next month.
