Agriculture: the opening of imports caused by the lack of crops during the transitional seasons

The Ministry of Agriculture confirmed that the opening of the door to import for some crops is caused by the seasonal movement, pointing out that this period is witnessing a shortage of supply, stressing that the use of what comes from abroad is a means to control prices.
The technical representative of the ministry, Mithaq Abdul Hassan, said, in a television interview followed by (Al-Mada), that "the numbers of the Iraqi people have changed from what they were ten years ago, when the Ministry of Planning stated, according to official press statements, that the total number of Iraqis has reached 41 million."
Abdul Hassan added, "This constitutes an important variable represented by the rise in the number of Iraqis, which must be matched by a development increase in all sectors, including the agricultural sector in its productive part."
He pointed out, "The development increase is supposed to be in the production unit, represented by lands and yield yields offered by those lands, in other words, production should be commensurate with the volume of demand and consumption."
Abdul Hassan pointed out that “agriculture is controlled within two main factors, namely the season and water, and some vegetables are controlled by the season, and it cannot be grown in another season, except through covered cultivation, and this is financially costly.”
He noted that "there is a gap that appears in the transition between two seasons, which is a normal situation, and the ministry has a device that monitors prices in the markets and abundance, and therefore we provide protection for the local product through the policy of dumping so that the local product remains preserved at its price."
Abdel-Hassan explained, "The transition in the season always leads to a shortage in supply, and therefore the ministry is forced to control prices to open imports, especially as we are in the month of Ramadan, which requires a price reduction."
And he continues, "The damage caused by the lack of water cannot be said that it targets one crop without the other," adding that "strategic crops, given the large area of cultivated land, are more susceptible to damage, such as wheat."
Abdul Hassan stated, "The Iraqi government represented by the Ministry of Agriculture has made huge leaps in the field of wheat cultivation. After the country in some seasons did not have seeds and imported them, we find that today we have self-sufficiency and there are seeds that are planted by about 5 million tons."
The government official stated, "Water is the second factor that we talked about, as it affects agriculture directly, especially the area of cultivated land."
Abdel Hassan added, "The Ministry of Agriculture is awaiting its meeting with the Ministry of Water Resources, according to which we will be informed of the volume of stored water releases that we will obtain after the snowmelt season during the current month."
He stressed, "The summer plan for this year is subject to what we will obtain from water quantities. As for the statements that precede that, they are speculation, but in all cases we take full precautions for any scarcity."
Abdel-Hassan went on to say that “the introduction of modern agricultural methods began years ago through the dissemination of techniques, the aim of which is to raise the yield of space and reduce and rationalize water to face any emergency situation represented by the scarcity resulting from water cuts due to neighboring countries.”
The Ministry of Agriculture had confirmed in a statement received by (Al-Mada) yesterday that "based on realistic data, it was decided to allow the import of agricultural crops, tomatoes, potatoes, eggplant and cucumbers, and from all border crossings
