Basra suffers from unemployment amid local and foreign competition
Shafaq News/ The representative of Basra, Ahmed Taha Al-Rubaie, revealed on Saturday, the reasons behind the difficulty of the people of the province in obtaining job opportunities, while referring to a set of solutions to absorb the unemployed and end the problem of unemployment within the community, calling for the need to do justice to the oil-rich province as much as it gives to Iraq.
Al-Rubaie told Shafaq News Agency, "The number of graduates and the unemployed reaches hundreds of thousands in Basra, so allocating a thousand degrees to the province does not represent anything, and it will not change the rates of the unemployed."
Last June, the Ministry of Finance sent a letter to local governments providing 1,000 contracts for each governorate and a salary of 300,000 dinars within the Food Security Law approved by the Iraqi Parliament.
As the deputy explained, "the armies of the unemployed are increasing annually, as they are constantly accumulating, and there is no solution but to revitalize the private sector and activate investments and other things to absorb the unemployed, as well as expand those covered by the social welfare network."
He added that "the migration is still going on from the nearby provinces towards Basra, given that it represents the gateway to Iraq and includes multiple industrial, commercial and oil activities, so whoever comes to Basra and settles there competes with the city's residents for job opportunities, infrastructure and other matters."
Al-Rubaie continued, by saying, “Although we do not reject the arrival of the sons of the rest of the provinces to Basra on the grounds that we are in one country,” adding, “But Basra Governorate must be fair in all fields and all assignments, as it has a large population, it is the second largest province in Iraq from In terms of population, its population may exceed 5 million, in addition to one million foreign people working in it, which affects the people of the province in trying to find a job opportunity for them.
The member of the House of Representatives for the province concluded by saying that "Basra contributes up to 90% of Iraq's budget, so it should be given to Basra in proportion to its participation and contribution in financing Iraq and supplementing its budget with funds."
Iraq's economy is characterized as a rentier consumer economy that depends entirely on the proceeds of selling oil, which is the main source of the country's general budget and which secures most of the Basra Governorate, in the far south of the country.
