Deputies from Dhi Qar Governorate demanded, today, Monday, that the marshes be declared a disaster area, while stressing the importance of providing a fair share of water for the marshes, and managing drought with an integrated work team.
The representative of the province, Hassan al-Asadi, said in a press conference held in the House of Representatives, with the participation of a number of Dhi Qar deputies: "We are following with sorrow and pain what is happening in the marshes of southern Iraq, where drought severely affects its environment, the various activities of its inhabitants and its biodiversity due to the policy of neighboring countries and the mismanagement of water resources. And what is involved in dealing with it as a depression to ward off flooding is nothing but a result of a lack of awareness of its economic, social, cultural, environmental and climatic importance.”
He added, "Despite its entry on the World Heritage List in July 2016, the officials did not abide by their responsibilities and did not provide their local communities with infrastructure such as schools, health centers and clean drinking water. In fact, the situation reached a violation of its water share at a time when the strategic reserves in both the Mosul Dam and Haditha were depleted. Dukan and Lake Tharthar with no less than 20 billion cubic meters in one year, starting from July 2021,” noting that “the amount of Al-Hawizeh Marsh currently does not exceed 1 cubic meter / second out of 200 cubic meters / second released from the Kut Dam.”
He continued, "The water releases of the marshes have greatly diminished, and the rate of inundation has decreased to less than 8% of the declared goal of the marshes in 2005 to restore 5560 km2, as officials ignored the recommendation of the fortieth conference of UNESCO to (provide the minimum amount of water for the marshes of southern Iraq within the heritage property). global ecosystem sustainability) and involve local people and relevant civil society organizations in updating and implementing the management plan”.
Al-Asadi called on the government to declare the marshes a disaster area, provide them with a fair share of water, manage drought with an integrated team, provide subsidized feed for buffaloes that cannot find water to drink, include the marsh residents in the social protection network, release the allocations of Article 140, and the resources of the urgent emergency plan until The water condition of the marshes has improved.
He pointed out, "The marshes of southern Iraq are among the most important and unique wetlands in the world, and they have a religion in the necks of the ruling political class, in which many of them found a safe and helpful place during the period of the struggle against dictatorship. It is the lung of Iraq and what remains for us of the immortal heritage of the Sumerians."
