The US Deputy Assistant Secretary of State, Jennifer Gavito, confirmed that the United States hopes the new government in Iraq will work to resolve the differences between Erbil and Baghdad over oil and gas.

Jennifer Gavito, in response to the questions of the Rudaw Media Network correspondent, Diyar Korda, on Tuesday (October 25, 2022), on the sidelines of a symposium of the Atlantic Council, in the American capital, Washington, said that the United States looks forward to working with the next government in areas such as climate change, confronting Corruption, defending human rights, and improving the work environment for international companies, which would contribute to the well-being of Iraqis across the country.

Deputy Assistant Secretary of State, urged the Prime Minister-designate to form a government that works to meet the needs of the Iraqi people.

The text of the conversation between Rudeau Media Network with Deputy Assistant Secretary of State Jennifer Gavito:

Rudaw: What are the points that you would like Prime Minister-designate Muhammad Shiaa Al-Sudani to consider in forming his government?

Deputy Assistant Secretary of State Jennifer Gavito:  As we've said frankly over the past year, we hope to form a government that will put the needs of the citizens and the sovereignty of Iraq at the forefront of its work, because that would form the basis of a strong government with which the United States can work as a strategic partner. We look forward to working with the next government in areas such as climate change, combating corruption, defending human rights, and improving the work environment for international companies, which will contribute to the well-being of Iraqis across the country. Therefore, the Prime Minister-designate decided to form a government that works to meet the needs of the Iraqi people.

Rudaw: Have you had dialogues with Erbil and Baghdad in order to resolve their differences over oil and gas?

US Deputy Assistant Secretary of State Jennifer Gavito: We  are very concerned about the continuing disputes over oil and gas, specifically because of their effects on American companies. Therefore, yes, we believe in the need to find a solution to it, and we hope that it will be at the forefront of the work of the new government.

Rudaw: What are your concerns about Iranian attacks on the Kurdistan Region?

Deputy Assistant Secretary of State Jennifer Gavito:  We are very concerned about Iranian attacks on the Kurdistan Region, and in particular the activities of pro-Iranian factions and Iran itself, because Iraqi sovereignty is of paramount importance, just as Iraqi citizens have demanded respect for their sovereignty. We demand that Iran and all parties respect that.

Rudaw: In your speech, you spoke about the necessity for the KDP and the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan to go to Baghdad together. What are your concerns about the current situation of the Kurdish parties, and why is the issue of their unity important to you?

Deputy Assistant Secretary of State Jennifer Gavito:  Kurdish citizens deserve political parties that put meeting their needs at the forefront of their work programs, and when they go to Baghdad, negotiate the new oil and gas law, and participate in the new government, there is no doubt that their impact will be greater, when they have a position Unified supports the demands and welfare of Kurdish citizens.
