Baghdad / Obelisk: In a report published by the Washington Institute, the American researcher Michael Knights considered that the evaluation of the new Iraqi government represents a measure for preserving American interests, calling on Washington to closely monitor the actions of the new leadership and to compel Baghdad to follow measurable standards.
Knights described the recent developments in Iraq, after the Sudanese government gained confidence, as "sad circumstances", considering that it is necessary for the US government and its partners to seek, quietly, but rather insistently, to hold early comprehensive elections to restore legitimacy to the democratic process. Meanwhile, all friends of Iraq should keep a keen eye on the new government to ensure it does not crack down on Western-leaning officials, cover up past corruption, or unleash a new wave of “asset drain” through state institutions. After several false alarms, the preservation of Iraq's close relationship with the West is truly at stake, and the continuation of this partnership can only be ensured by setting firm expectations.
He said that it is likely that the government will have several disturbing flaws that the United States and its other partners cannot ignore, considering that the political results in Iraq today are an undemocratic start. Al-Sudani came to office as a result of a failed electoral process in which successful voting, under the supervision of the United Nations, was steadily undermined by the losing parties.
Knights calls on Washington to be aware of the possibility of purging, or quietly marginalizing, the United States' trusted partners in the military and the "Iraqi National Intelligence Service."
He added: If the Central Bank of Iraq is used as a source of dollar funding for anti-American groups in Iraq, the US Treasury will likely start preventing Baghdad from accessing the dollar and the global financial system.
He continued: Returning to the path of 2018 and 2019 will have the same devastating effect at the local level. This approach eventually caused widespread popular uprisings against the government.

He concluded by saying: US policymakers must respond by reviving a strengthened version of the “rules of the road” that followed in the period 2018-2019, which stipulates that Iraq is being tested and is subject to close monitoring by Washington.
