    The Ministry of Agriculture announced, on Thursday, the formation of the Council of Ministers, a supreme committee for the advancement of the agricultural sector in the country, headed by the Prime Minister.
    The advisor at the Ministry of Agriculture, Mahdi Damad Al-Qaisi, said, “The Supreme Committee for the Advancement of the Agricultural Sector, which was formed under the chairmanship of the Prime Minister and the Ministers of Agriculture and Water Resources, and the membership of general managers in the two ministries and a number of experts, will focus its work on reconsidering agricultural plans according to climate changes and the size of groundwater reserves, such as the Samawah desert.” Which is characterized by large areas, which requires optimal investment by adopting the planting of strategic crops based on groundwater as a supplementary irrigation source after the rains. 
    Al-Qaisi added, "There was a previous proposal presented years ago, to form the Supreme Water Council headed by the Prime Minister and a number of experts to draw up a general policy for the country," expressing his hope that "the proposal will be activated on the ground by adopting a new structure, provided that it is called the Supreme Council for Agriculture and Water." To be inclusive of both ministries, the water file is considered the responsibility of Parliament, the government, the judiciary and civil organizations, as it is a water security file, and therefore agricultural security will not be achieved without its presence. 
    He explained, "The role of the Ministry of Agriculture is to rehabilitate agricultural lands that have been exposed to drought through the development of irrigation methods undertaken by the Ministry of Water Resources through projects to transfer water through closed pipes to avoid evaporation due to high temperatures during the summer, in addition to adopting modern metered irrigation methods." Such as spraying and using it with strategic crops such as wheat, barley, yellow and white corn, stressing that it rationalizes water consumption by up to 40%, in addition to what it contributes to reducing the effort of farmers while carrying out their work.
