Baghdad / bright news
Yesterday, Wednesday, a specialized parliamentary committee stated its intention to draft the local council elections law within a month, stressing that it must be voted on before the middle of this year, so that the Independent High Electoral Commission has the appropriate opportunity to conduct the polls in October.
Omid Muhammad, a member of the Legal Committee, said, "The committee recently met with the Board of Commissioners of the Independent High Electoral Commission regarding the local elections."
And Muhammad added, "The committee agreed with the Commission that it will undertake the preparation of a draft law for these elections, which will be presented to the Board of Commissioners and the relevant authorities in order to proceed with it." He pointed out that “the ministerial curriculum stipulates that local elections must be held no later than October of this year.”
Muhammad explained, "There are a number of opinions regarding the electoral system. Will we remain in the current situation or return to St. Lego, in addition to the issue of electoral districts?"
He stressed, "The committee will seek to formulate a draft acceptable to the political blocs and to be applicable by the Board of Commissioners of the Independent High Electoral Commission."
Muhammad said, "The committee's efforts come towards drafting this law within a period not exceeding 30 days, and then it is sent to the relevant authorities."
He stressed, "The resolution of all matters related to the local elections in Parliament should be before the middle of this year."
And Muhammad concluded, “The reason behind this is so that the Council of Commissioners will have a period of time to complete the technical procedures for voting and restore life to the local councils before the end of this year.”
For his part, Ali Al-Fatlawi, a member of the Al-Fatah Alliance, stated that “the coordination framework is committed to all the pledges contained in the document of the political agreement.”
Al-Fatlawi added, "One of these pledges is the emphasis on holding local elections next October."
