    Baghdad today - Baghdad
Today, Saturday, the Parliamentary Transport and Communications Committee revealed new details related to the work of the Al-Faw port and an important stage that must be implemented in order for the port to function in a real way.
The head of the committee, Zahra Al-Bajari, said in an exclusive interview with (Baghdad Today): "We need to implement the strategic development road to transport goods to Turkey and from there to Europe," indicating that "there is no benefit from the port without this important strategic project, which is currently being transferred to a company." consultancy for the purpose of studying the file and proceeding with its implementation.
Al-Bajari added, "The port needs to build warehouses, land roads and trains to activate its work."
Thirteen years ago, Iraq laid the foundation stone for the large port of Faw project in the city of Basra, in southern Iraq, and its time was described as "the most prominent sign of the new phase in Iraq," according to the then Prime Minister, Nuri al-Maliki.
In the planning stages of the Al-Faw port project, Iraq promoted the idea that it would be one of the largest ports in the region, if not the largest at all. In 2020, Daewoo Engineering and Construction won a contract to implement the project, worth $2.7 billion.
In addition to the container terminal and port work, the project will include the construction of one of the largest undersea tunnels in the world, leading to the shallow port of Umm Qasr, as well as new ways to improve communications with Basra, according to Global Construction, a website that specializes in construction work around the world.
In 2021, Anmar Al-Safi, an official at the state-owned General Company for Ports, stated that the Korean company had completed the main berths of the port, and said that work is now underway to build the tunnel, which will be completed within four years.
"The final phase of the project includes the construction of approximately 100 berths that will serve the port," he added.
The great port of Al-Faw is an Iraqi port in the Al-Faw peninsula, south of Basra Governorate, in the far south of the country. Its cost is about 4.6 billion euros, and the port’s capacity is estimated at 99 million tons annually, to be one of the largest ports overlooking the Gulf and the tenth in the world, and to lay the foundation stone for this project. April 5, 2010.
The issue of the great port of Faw, and the delay in completing it, sparked controversy, and representatives accused successive governments of making deals with neighboring countries that neglected the construction of the port in favor of the ports of those countries.
The project also witnessed some delay after the "suicide" of the technical director of the South Korean company Daewoo, which is implementing the Faw Grand Port project, for mysterious reasons.
