On Sunday, the Parliamentary Finance Committee cleared its yard of responsibility for “ignoring” the retirees’ demonstrations in order to adjust their salaries, after their demonstrations continued for more than 4 months to no avail.
Committee member Mustafa Al-Karawi said, in an interview, that “there is no ignoring the demands of the retirees to raise their salaries, especially with the very low wages of some retirees,” noting that “the House of Representatives does not have any authority to increase and amend these salaries, but rather it is one of the powers government exclusively.
Al-Karawi added, “The House of Representatives, through its specialized parliamentary committees, submitted more than one official request to the relevant government agencies, and more than one minister was hosted in this regard, but there is no government measure to raise the salaries of retirees despite popular and parliamentary demands.”
Hundreds of retirees gathered this morning in the Al-Alawi area in the center of the capital, Baghdad, before they launched a demonstration heading to the Council of Ministers to demand an increase in their salaries.
The demonstrators stressed the need for the Council of Ministers and Representatives to implement Article 36 of the Pension Law of 2014, which provides for an increase in the salaries of retirees when the inflation rate increases and the dollar rises.
Earlier, the National Retirement Authority confirmed the government's intention to increase the salaries of retirees, noting that the matter requires an extensive study of its economic dimensions.
