With the government moving towards clean energy and its recent announcement of approving the construction of two large solar power stations in Basra and Samawah with capacities of up to 1,500 megawatts, there are renewed calls and demands for investment in renewable energy sources.
Iraq is characterized by sunny weather for many months of the year, in addition to other sources of clean energy such as wind turbines, watersheds, and others.
Many countries in the world have turned towards alternative energy.
Energy analyst Yassin Al-Fadli told (Al-Sabah): "Renewable energy is very expensive in its infancy, and it seems that we need quite some time for Iraq to be able to enter the world of renewable and clean energy."
However, the world of renewable energy will not end the electricity crisis rooted in the country, and this is confirmed by energy experts who suggest the inability to leave the fossil oil sector completely and move towards solar energy and other types of renewable energy.
Al-Fadhili reveals the reason, saying, "It is slow in development and takes a long time, in addition to being very expensive. China, which is one of the best countries in the world in manufacturing and producing solar cells, has been able to supply only 35 percent of the energy generated by these solar cells and is still bought every day." Between 6-8 million barrels of crude oil for power generation.
For his part, economist Salem Al-Hilali believes that "many countries have left the traditional ideas of energy generation towards their clean and renewable sources. For example, Europe has announced that at the beginning of the next decade it will not allow cars that run on regular fuel to walk in its streets or enter cities, and that citizens are obligated to convert and acquire electric cars".
Al-Hilali pointed out the importance of the state sponsoring this issue and encouraging its institutions and individuals to move towards wind energy means, such as electric fans, energy generated from rivers, hydroelectricity, and life energy, which are all alternative, clean, and renewable energy sources. The transition from the use of the most common traditional energy source, which is oil, to other sources is that Iraq seeks to adopt its systems and keep pace with the development taking place in this field, and its economic returns in the long term. There are many investment projects that the government intends to launch in this direction, especially with regard to stopping the waste that The process of extracting associated gas, which witnesses a waste of four billion dollars annually, is accompanied by expert estimates.
The problem does not lie in this financial waste only, but also includes the great effects of not investing gas in going towards environmental pollution, which the whole world is struggling to mitigate its damages that cause drought, warming, and climate-polluting problems.
The government also seeks, within its endeavors in this direction, to try to maximize the state’s resources, and since Iraq enjoys a ground that allows it to transform and move to clean energy sources from winds, permanent sunshine, and vast desert areas in order to achieve self-sufficiency in operating electric power plants and not to continue relying on importing gas from neighboring countries.
