    Baghdad today - Baghdad
Today, Sunday (July 23, 2023), economist Abdul Rahman Al-Mashhadani revealed that the total number of Iraqi banks sanctioned by Washington has increased to 19 banks, while he sent an invitation to the Central Bank of Iraq.
Al-Mashhadani told "Baghdad Today," that "after the US Treasury's decision to impose sanctions on 14 Iraqi banks a few days ago, the total number of banks in the sanctions file has risen to 19 banks so far."
He added, "The statements of the banks that were included in the penalties were like messages of reassurance to their customers about their money," pointing out that "on the other hand, their payment cards no longer work outside the country, and there is no mechanism to pay them in coordination with other banks because they represent a risk."
He pointed out that "according to the information, the US Treasury held a meeting with representatives of the 14 banks months ago in Baghdad, and they were warned that they would join a special sanctions list," noting that "many payment cards were seized at the border crossings to smuggle money, and this is another problem for the national economy."
And he called for "the need for the central bank to form investigative committees after the US Treasury's decision to punish Iraqi banks to show whether they were actually involved in the file of smuggling and money laundering."
Al-Mashhadani explained that "in front of the sanctioned banks, an American law firm is authorized to file lawsuits in Washington against the sanctions decision, and to present what it has of evidence proving the contrary to lift the ban."
Earlier, the United States prevented 14 Iraqi banks from conducting dollar transactions as part of a comprehensive campaign against the transfer of US currency to Iran and other countries subject to sanctions in the Middle East, according to the American Wall Street Journal.
