    Baghdad today - Baghdad
The Secretary-General of the National Affiliation Party, Hikmat Suleiman, confirmed today, Sunday (May 19, 2024), that the “Taqaddum” coalition was killed in order to prevent any figure from Anbar from reaching the presidency of Parliament, while indicating that the events of yesterday’s House of Representatives session were “intended.”
Suleiman said in an interview with "Baghdad Today", "Democracy and its results must be respected, and what  happened in the House of Representatives was intended and expected, and it was according to planning in order to create problems that would prevent the selection of Salem Al-Issawi to head the House of Representatives."
He added, "The presidency of the House of Representatives  is  a right for the Sunni component, which forces have been making absent for months due to narrow partisan interests, far from the interest of the component and the illusory participation in important decisions of Parliament."
He pointed out that "Mahmoud Al-Mashhadani was not the best choice for Taqaddam, but they supported him to prevent any figure from Anbar from reaching the presidency of the House of Representatives in order to avoid the consequences of what is happening in the province in terms of the presence of a legislative authority capable of oversight and making important decisions and an attempt to leave their presence without any accountability or actual oversight." .
Yesterday, the Acting Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mohsen Al-Mandalawi, decided to adjourn the 25th session until further notice after the failure of the vote to elect a new Speaker of Parliament .
Sources from within the Council reported to "Baghdad Today" that Al-Mandalawi was adjourned to Session No. 25, after disturbances and skirmishes among Council members, as a result of the failure of the vote to elect a new Speaker of Parliament .
Parliament headed for a third round of elections for “Speaker of the House of Representatives” after Representative Salem Al-Issawi, the candidate of the “Azm, Sovereignty, and Decisive” blocs, obtained 158 votes, and Representative Mahmoud Al-Mashhadani, the candidate of the “Taqaddum” bloc, obtained 137 votes, while 3 votes went to Representative Amer Abdul-Jabbar and 13 votes. It was considered invalid (empty) .
Earlier yesterday evening, the Iraqi Council of Representatives ended the second round of voting on the candidate for the presidency of Parliament, while the counting and sorting process began .
The Parliament’s Media Department stated in a statement received by “Baghdad Today” that “the House of Representatives has completed the second round voting process to elect the Speaker of the House of Representatives .”
According to the district, the number of voting representatives reached 311 .
The voting process was limited to candidates Salem Al-Issawi, Mahmoud Al-Mashhadani and Amer Abdul-Jabbar, after Talal Al-Zubaie withdrew.
