The House of Representatives expressed its support for what came out of the meeting of the four presidencies yesterday, the first Sunday, and one of its files was support for severing relations with Sweden or any country that does not respect the sanctities of Muslims, and while the President of the Supreme Judicial Council, Faiq Zaidan, announced the continuation of Iraq with procedures to recover the lost person called “Sloan Mumica” who burned a copy of the Holy Quran, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs called on the European Union countries to reconsider the so-called “freedom of expression.”
The four presidencies met yesterday at the headquarters of Parliament Speaker Muhammad al-Halbousi to discuss a number of files, including that the presidencies condemned, during the meeting, the deliberate abuse and authorization of the Swedish authorities to insult the Noble Qur’an and the Iraqi flag.
And the Supreme Judicial Council stated, in a statement, that “the head of the Supreme Judicial Council, Judge Faeq Zaidan, attended the presidencies meeting in the presence of the President of the Republic, Abdul Latif Jamal Rashid, the Prime Minister, Muhammad Shia’ Al-Sudani, and the Speaker of Parliament, Muhammad Al-Halbousi.”
He added, “The meeting discussed a number of issues, including judicial and governmental procedures in following up the file of recovering the accused of burning the Holy Qur’an called (Sloan Mumica), as well as procedures for ensuring the security of diplomatic missions and holding accountable the perpetrators of the crime of burning and vandalizing the headquarters of diplomatic missions.”
In addition, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs strongly condemned the repeated burning of a copy of the Holy Qur’an in front of the Embassy of the Republic of Iraq in Denmark, and added that “these systematic actions allow the infection of extremism and hatred to put societies in front of a real threat to peaceful coexistence.”
In a statement, the Foreign Ministry called on the authorities of the countries in the European Union to “quickly reconsider what is called freedom of expression and the right to demonstrate, and for there to be a clear collective position to prevent these abuses in front of the buildings of the embassies of the Republic of Iraq on its territory,” noting that “silence and lack of reliance on clear procedures prevent the perpetrators of these acts and subject them to legal accountability, paving the way for the penetration of this dangerous behavior.”
And the ministry renewed, “The position of the government of Iraq calling for international resolutions and instruments to criminalize these acts, looking at respect for religious symbols and holy books in an equal and transparent manner, without discrimination on the basis of religion and race.”
For his part, Member of Parliament Muhammad Al-Baldawi said, in an interview with Al-Sabah: “We, as members of Parliament, support the courageous decision of the Iraqi government to sever relations with Sweden after the disgraceful act of some imbeciles who claim to have Iraqi citizenship, and today they have become tools to implement the suspicious agendas of international intelligence.”
And he stated, “What Sweden has done of transgressing and insulting the Qur’an and the Iraqi flag that represents the country’s sovereignty is unacceptable, and that any country today that tries to offend or isolate Iraq or inflame and provoke positions within the country through such actions, we will have a similar position with it as our position with Sweden.”
continued; “Today, the position that Iraq took in defending the Book of God, as well as its sovereignty represented by the Iraqi flag, and popular reactions to such positions will be repeated if these actions are repeated with any country,” noting that “Iraq deals in accordance with the Vienna Convention and international agreements with the protection of diplomatic missions on its soil.”
Al-Baldawi pointed out that “Parliament supports the protection of embassies and diplomatic missions in Iraq, but today we are talking about a popular position that rejects whether it is expressed through individuals, sheikhs, dignitaries, and clerics, or through the political stance, because we cannot allow any country to transgress Iraq’s sovereignty and sanctities.”
