The Ministry of Health is working to implement the government program by providing the necessary financial allocations to provide cancer treatment devices, in addition to opening new centers and developing the type of service provided to cancer patients throughout the country.
The Minister of Health, Dr. Saleh Al-Hasnawi, stated in an interview with “Al-Sabah” that “supporting cancer patients and cancer centers is the most important pillar of the government program by providing the necessary funds to support the program.”
He added, "The Cancer Council is the body concerned with providing preventive, curative, or rehabilitative services. The Council was activated under the current government, and the Ministry of Health continues to provide all the services that cancer patients need." He explained, "In Iraq, there are four governorates that suffer from a shortage of radiological devices, and the necessary amounts have been allocated to equip them. Now these centers in those governorates are going through the technical study stage, and within two or three months they will be referred for signing contracts. We also have in Baghdad the contract was signed to build A center in Sadr City is under construction, and we have two centers in Al-Kadhimiya and the addition of two machines in (Al-Amal Hospital), and within the next six months these machines will become operational, in addition to the fact that all the modern hospitals that have been opened and that will be opened in the future will contain cancer centers.” The Minister of Health pointed out that “the cancer services project enjoys direct support from Prime Minister Muhammad Shiaa Al-Sudani and the Council of Ministers, and these are serious and real steps. If we look at the year 2008, Iraq had two radiotherapy machines, and we in the Ministry of Health were sending patients outside Iraq to receive treatment.” Radiotherapy, but now we will not send any patient outside Iraq, and we will work to develop these services and spread them more widely on the map of our country.” For his part, the official spokesman for the Ministry of Health, Dr. Saif Al-Badr, explained in an interview with “Al-Sabah” that “in every governorate - except for Baghdad Governorate - there are at least two radiotherapy centers, and the Ministry’s plan indicates developing what exists from these centers and modernizing them according to The latest international standards, increasing the number of health institutions specializing in radiation therapy, and preparing radiation therapy devices within existing institutions.” He stressed, "Supporting institutions for treating cancer patients is one of the priorities of the government program in the health sector, and during the past year there were important openings that increased the ability of our health institutions to accommodate more patients and cooperate in treating various oncology and cancerous cases." The head of the Iraqi Society for Oncology Surgery, Dr. Aqeel Shaker, stated in an interview with Al-Sabah that “the treatment of cancer is surgical, chemical, radiological, and biological treatment, where the disease is diagnosed and then the multidisciplinary team decides to treat the cancer patient with surgery or one of the types of treatments.” Chemical, biological, radiological, surgical or hormonal. He explained, "The number of cancer cases in numbers in Iraq is equivalent to the countries of the neighboring region, and in Iraq, doctors follow the system of international protocols in treatment," noting that "Iraqi hospitals are equipped with operating theaters in which operations on cancerous tumors are performed, and the (Iraqi Society for Surgical Oncology) has been established." Shaker added, “Currently, there is a cancer registration registry in the Ministry of Health, which is located in the Cancer Council, and this registry focuses on the ten most common cancers. As for the surgeries that are performed now, they are breast surgeries and lymph node staining. They are located in Baghdad and the governorates, and there are doctors who graduate annually from (the Council). The Iraqi Board of Medical Specialties and the Arab Board of Medical Specialties are doctors who specialize in gastrointestinal surgery and oncology.
