    Economy News _ Baghdad
The Ministry of Environment indicated that 68,000 families were displaced from the marsh areas this year due to water scarcity.
The Undersecretary of the Ministry, Dr. Jassim Al-Falahi, said in an interview with Al-Sabah, followed by Al-Iqtisad News, that “forestry or water scarcity caused an unprecedented deterioration in drought, desertification, and shrinkage of agricultural lands, which led to the loss of 68 percent of the lands that were suitable for agriculture.” This is accompanied by an unprecedented increase in the population, reaching one million and 300 thousand Iraqis annually.
He pointed out that “the decline in agricultural areas and the increase in rates of desertification and dust and sand storms are certainly accompanied by what is called “internal displacement” and the forcing of citizens to leave their lands as a result of the lack of sufficient water, which forced 68 thousand families in the marsh areas during the summer of this year to move from their places. “Because they lost their means of livelihood after they were dependent on agriculture, raising buffalo, fishing, and birds.”
Al-Falahi warned that “internal displacement may be a justification for external displacement, or the establishment of slums on the threshold of cities suffering from a significant lack of services, which will be a hotbed for many social problems, and increased divorce rates as a result of the lack of an economic safety umbrella, and high rates of poverty and cases of drug abuse and gangs.” The organization, and their recruitment of terrorist groups, as a result of the loss of livelihoods.”
