Shafaq News/ The Chief of Staff of the Peshmerga, Lieutenant General Issa Uzair, stated on Thursday that the main reason for the Qarachogh Mountain incident in Makhmur district was due to the lack of joint coordination between the Peshmerga forces and the Iraqi army, in addition to the push by external hands to cause armed friction between the two sides.
This came in a statement he made to reporters on the sidelines of the burial ceremony of the Commander of the 18th Infantry Brigade in the Peshmerga Forces, Colonel Saleh Zarari, who died this morning as a result of wounds he sustained during the clashes that took place with the Iraqi army in Makhmour a few days ago.
Uzair said in his statement that among the ranks of the Peshmerga forces, 17 members were injured, including two whose health condition was not good, noting that two Iraqi army personnel were killed and 8 others were injured.
He added, "The reasons for the incident are many, but the first reason is the lack of coordination, and the haste in extending control over those points from which the Kurdistan Workers' Party withdrew, which left chaos in the region," noting that "external hands led to this incident occurring, unfortunately." ".
The Chief of Staff of the Peshmerga Forces noted that the committee formed regarding the incident by the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, Muhammad Shiaa al-Sudani, has completed its work tasks, and we are awaiting the issuance of the results.
On October 19, the Kurdistan Workers' Party announced the complete withdrawal of its forces from the Makhmour camp, located south of Erbil Governorate.
The Central Command for People's Protection, the military wing of the Workers' Party, said in a statement that it had issued an order to withdraw all its armed elements from the Makhmour refugee camp and transfer them to the Qandil Mountains and other areas in the Kurdistan Region.
She explained that this withdrawal comes after the end of the ISIS threat, as a number of the party’s fighters were transferred to the camp in 2014 with the aim of fighting ISIS elements.
The death toll of the Peshmerga forces in clashes with the Iraqi army in the Makhmour area a few days ago rose to three people.
Last Monday, the Chief of Staff of the Ministry of Peshmerga issued a statement regarding the armed clash that took place with members of the Iraqi army in Makhmour, causing casualties and injuries on both sides.
The statement said: "Unfortunately, an unfortunate accident occurred in the Makhmour area yesterday, which led to martyrs and injuries on both sides. As we express our deep sorrow and condolences to the families of the victims, we wish a speedy recovery for the injured."
He added: "We affirm our commitment to working with the federal government for a radical and lasting solution, in a way that achieves security and stability throughout Iraq, and we support what was stated in the statement of the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces to conduct a rapid and transparent investigation into the incident to determine its causes, and find appropriate solutions to enhance security and stability in Region".
Special Forces Major General Yahya Rasoul, spokesman for the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, confirmed on Sunday that three casualties and seven injuries occurred during an armed clash between the Iraqi army and the Peshmerga, near the town of Makhmour, separating Nineveh Governorate and Erbil.
He added, "Accordingly, he directed the formation of a high-level committee to investigate the circumstances of the incident and find out its merits, and the sacrifices that resulted from it, stressing to all leaders and commanders at all levels the necessity of self-restraint, whether from the federal government units or the Peshmerga, and the importance of acting with great wisdom, giving priority to higher interests, strengthening the common interests, and avoiding... "An opportunity against the enemies of Iraq, which gave a message to the whole world about the unity of its proud people."
