The American CNN news network reported that President Joe Biden and his senior advisors warned Israel that time is limited for its war on the Gaza Strip, and the support provided to it will erode as international anger intensifies over the extent of the humanitarian suffering of the Palestinians in the Strip.
CNN said that Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin and Secretary of State Anthony Blinken, who arrived in Israel on Friday carrying a message stressing the need to protect civilian lives, spoke to their Israeli counterparts about this matter in private conversations.
She added that they told the Israelis that American support would erode, with dire strategic repercussions for the Israeli forces in their war with Hamas.
Behind the scenes, US officials believe that Israel has limited time to achieve its stated goals, such as eliminating Hamas, before international outrage over human suffering and civilian casualties reaches the point of no return.
The protests escalated in Western capitals, reaching such an extent that they hindered a fundraising gathering for Biden in the state of Minnesota, which he personally attended.
In fact, there is recognition within the Biden administration that this moment is rapidly approaching, and some of Biden's closest advisers believe that Israel has weeks, not months, before pushing back on pressure on the US government to call for a ceasefire becomes untenable.
UN experts warn that the Palestinians are at risk of extermination. The network quoted two sources familiar with the matter as saying that Biden and his national security team were upset by the targeting of the Jabalia camp two days ago, which led to horrific scenes of civilian deaths and destruction.
“President Biden did not like this matter at all,” one of the sources said.
A senior official in the Payne administration said, “The problem (for Israel) is that the intensity of criticism against it is increasing, and not only among its opponents, but among its best friends.”
