Launching the first project to promote environmental sustainability in Iraq

Baghdad: Hoda Al-Azzawi,
in cooperation between the Ministry of Construction and Housing and the Osool Foundation for Economic and Sustainable Development, the first Iraqi project was launched aimed at preparing standard documents, setting green evaluation standards, formulating sustainable policies, and implementing audits effectively.
This came in accordance with the directives of the Prime Minister and with the support of the Minister of Construction, Housing, Municipalities and Public Works, Benkin Rekani. This historic step comes in response to the proposal of the “Osul” Foundation for economic development and sustainable development. The meeting was held yesterday, Saturday, headed by the Undersecretary of the Ministry of Construction and Housing, Jaber Al-Hassani, with the participation of the Ministries of Electricity. Environment and Planning) in addition to the National Investment Authority and the Baghdad Municipality, in addition to most of the relevant formations of the Ministry of Construction.
The head of the “Osoul” Foundation for Economic Development and Sustainable Development, Khaled Al-Jabri, explained in an interview with “Al-Sabah” that “the project to enhance environmental sustainability in Iraq leads towards a window of green economic transformation, and through this project Iraq can prove to the world that it has begun to legislate and enact The governing laws and mechanisms that will be the path to implementing projects that fall into the field of the green economy.”
He pointed out, “Iraq must commit to voluntary adaptation, in accordance with the (Paris Climate Agreement) and according to the (Loss and Damage Fund), which was approved at the meeting of the parties last year, and Iraq has a share in that.”
He added, “This project was submitted as a proposal by the Foundation to the Ministry of Construction, Housing, Municipalities and Public Works, and the project was supported by the Minister of Construction, Benkin Rekani, and interacted with him due to its consistency with the directives of Prime Minister Muhammad Shiaa Al-Sudani. All concerned parties from government institutions were invited and teams were formed.” For the purpose of starting to prepare these standards, which are prepared for the first time in Iraq and which are being worked on.”
Al-Jabri pointed out, “The cooperation of the Ministry of Construction and Housing, headed by the Technical Undersecretary and Head of the Service Effort, Engineer Jaber Al-Hassani, and the formation of a committee to communicate with external technical supporting bodies for the purpose of obtaining foreign expertise, and avoiding the mistakes that some countries suffered from while going through this process, which reflects positively on the situation.” The style of living inside buildings, raising the quality of construction, reducing health damage due to poor designs and implementation, and reducing electricity consumption in buildings, and this will also contribute to reducing the poor consumption that we suffer from today and even the health system and the educational system.”
He added, “In addition to the above, it is possible to change the method of work in designing cities and suffice with this national effort until the documents are completed and then updated annually, based on the circumstances that the country needs, in addition to that there will be administrative units responsible for inspecting and examining the extent of the implementation of these measures.” Standards for all projects and in all specializations.
The head of the “Osool” Foundation continues his talk about the project, as “an important step towards enhancing environmental sustainability in Iraq and the transition towards a green economy, as the project seeks to lay strong foundations for sustainable development and environmental protection,” indicating that “in light of the challenges facing the country from Climate change and the necessity of relying on projects that comply with international standards. This project is considered a historic achievement and the basic building block for entering into a green economy,” he noted, noting that “the meeting on the project was attended by representatives of several ministries and government agencies, and highlights the close cooperation between various parties to achieve sustainable development goals, as well as “It reflects the government’s commitment to building a better environmental future, as it seeks to enhance the sustainability of projects and policies to achieve long-term economic and social benefits.”
