The head of the General Tax Authority, Ali Waad Allawi, revealed the imposition of taxes on seventy private universities in Iraq, indicating that the amount will reach one billion dollars, indicating that the taxes announce an agreement with Kurdistan to unify procedures.
Allawi said in an interview followed by Mawazine News, “The law on universities and private colleges in 2016 imposes taxes from the establishment of universities, and taxes were imposed on 70 of them, bringing the number to about one billion dollars.”
He pointed out that "most of the universities agreed to pay the amounts because abstaining means placing the government's hand on those universities because they refuse to pay the legal taxes."
He pointed out that "an agreement was reached with Kurdistan regarding the unification of customs and tax procedures. It was approved by Baghdad and is awaiting the approval of the Kurdistan government to proceed with it and end any tax crisis between the two parties."
