Baghdad/Al-Masala Al-Hadath: Reliable sources revealed that land mafias control all Iraqi governorates, exploiting municipal and real estate registration departments to plunder lands and forge bonds, achieving huge profits estimated at tens of billions of dinars at the expense of citizens’ rights and property.
This dangerous file highlights a disturbing phenomenon that threatens social and economic security in Iraq, and shows the extent of rampant corruption in government institutions.
Member of the Parliamentary Integrity Committee, Hadi Al-Salami, revealed the largest movement in Iraq regarding “land mafias,” while pointing to following a three-dimensional strategy to uncover manipulation and forgery operations.
Al-Salami said, “The undisputed truth is that there are (land mafias) active in all governorates without exception,” noting that “they seize and plunder land through municipal and real estate registration departments and forge bonds in various ways.”
A member of the Parliamentary Integrity Committee pointed out that “we are faced with a complex and dangerous file because the talk is about mafias and networks that have entered their pockets tens of billions of dinars through tampering with citizens’ rights and property.”
According to the sources, these mafias operate in various ways, including seizing empty or disputed lands, forging bonds and official documents, exploiting their relationships with employees in municipal and real estate registration departments, threats, and blackmail.
Estimates indicate that these mafias have achieved huge profits estimated at tens of billions of dinars over the past years, through the sale of seized or counterfeit lands.
This phenomenon highlights the extent of rampant corruption in Iraqi government institutions, as some employees participate in these illegal practices in exchange for bribes or privileges.
Al-Salami added, “The issue of forgery and seizure of lands and bonds in the municipality and the real estate registration department in Najaf constituted a public opinion issue and prompted more attention to be shed on this complex file.”
He explained, “Immediately, a series of measures were taken by the Integrity Commission through investigation, follow-up, and revealing all the secrets of this dangerous file, which shows illegal control over property and lands worth tens of billions of dinars.”
This phenomenon has exacerbated the problem of housing shortage in Iraq, as purchasing a piece of land has become very difficult, especially for young people with limited income.
The sources call on the Iraqi government to take decisive measures to combat this phenomenon, by holding accountable those involved in these illegal practices, enhancing transparency in the work of the municipal and real estate registration departments, and establishing strict mechanisms to prevent the forgery of bonds and official documents.
He pointed out that “the war against (land mafias) needs more time, especially with the complexities of forgery and seizure operations.”
The Federal Integrity Commission announced the arrest of (7) employees in the Municipality Directorate and the Tax Department in Najaf Governorate. Against the background of forging official documents and intentionally causing damage to the funds and interests of the entity for which they work.
