Minister of Justice Khaled Ashwani confirmed on Wednesday that real estate registration departments are witnessing large-scale fraud operations in areas of the capital, Baghdad.
Shawani said in a televised interview followed by "Al-Eqtisad News" that the real estate registration departments witnessed major fraud operations during the years between 2014 and 2018, and the fraud of weak souls on seized and abandoned properties and seizing them through illegal means and transferring their ownership by paying bribes to the land registry departments, especially in the areas of the capital, Baghdad.
He added that the radical solution to ending cases of forgery within the real estate registration departments is to move towards the automation system, pointing out that there are obstacles that prevent the introduction of the automation system.
He pointed out that the bureaucracy and restrictions in the real estate law are one of the reasons that led to the spread of the phenomenon of bribery and extortion in the land registry offices.
It is noteworthy that the Al-Amiriya Real Estate Registration Department witnessed the largest forgery operation, approximately 20 thousand transactions for the sale of lands reserved for the state within the Al-Jihad neighborhood area. After a year and a half, the issue was discovered by citizens who were sold lands with forged deeds.
