    Economy News - Baghdad
[rtl]As Iraq tends to export shipments of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) in excess of its needs, questions have arisen about the possibility of using this gas to produce electricity, which may put the country in a crisis.[/rtl]
[rtl]In this context, the Ministry of Oil issued a clarification, which Al-Eqtisad News reviewed, today, Saturday, May 4 (2024), regarding the shipment prepared for export by the Basra Gas Company, as it confirmed that the gas exported abroad is not used to operate power stations.[/rtl]
[rtl]The spokesman for the Ministry of Oil in Iraq, Asim Jihad, said that there is a need to differentiate between dry gas and liquefied petroleum gas, as the former is used to operate power stations, while the latter is used for cooking purposes, and it can also be used as fuel to operate cars.[/rtl]
    [rtl]Liquefied petroleum gas in Iraq[/rtl]
[rtl]Oil Ministry spokesman Assem Jihad explained that the ministry has a surplus in the production of liquefied petroleum gas, and therefore it began exporting it abroad, with the aim of achieving additional revenues for the state treasury, according to statements published by the official agency.[/rtl]
[rtl]He explained that his country had previously announced that it was going to export this type of gas, if there was a surplus of the need, but it would not export the dry gas that the state uses to operate electricity generation plants.[/rtl]
[rtl]The Undersecretary of the Ministry of Oil in Iraq for Gas Affairs, Izzat Saber, announced on Thursday, May 2, that the Basra Gas Company is in the process of exporting the first shipment of “semi-refrigerated” propane gas, under the ministry’s supervision.[/rtl]
[rtl]Saber announced, in a statement, that the quantity of the shipment that the Basra Gas Company will export of “semi-refrigerated” propane gas amounted to more than 10,700 tons, and it is one of the large shipments that are marketed and carried on the back of specialized tankers.[/rtl]
[rtl]He added that exporting semi-frozen propane gas comes within the plans of the Iraqi Ministry of Oil and Basra Gas Company, to maximize national production of dry gas, and export the surplus of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), condensates and other products to global markets to achieve financial revenues.[/rtl]
[rtl]On April 18, 2024, Baghdad signed 18 memorandums of understanding with American companies, with the aim of enhancing cooperation to exploit the gas associated with oil fields, and increasing electricity generation capabilities in Iraq, which is suffering from major crises in this sector.[/rtl]
[rtl]Iraqi companies seized about 14 memorandums of understanding and agreements, out of the 18 that were signed during the visit of Prime Minister Muhammad Shia al-Sudani to Washington, as the government seeks to exploit natural gas that is extracted automatically from oil fields, to produce electricity locally.[/rtl]
[rtl]These agreements are in line with the directions of the United States, which aims to reduce Iraq's dependence, one of the largest oil and gas producing countries in the world, on Iran, as Baghdad's main crisis lies in the lack of investment in the energy sector, in the wake of the war it went through.[/rtl]
