Today, Friday, Prime Minister Muhammad Shiaa Al-Sudani directed the formation of a committee to prepare the government response to the UN report on human rights.
The Iraqi government spokesman, Bassem Al-Awadi, said in a statement received by Mawazine News, "The Iraqi government has reviewed the report of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, issued on June 27, 2024, which devotes his follow-up to the implementation of the death penalty against terrorists convicted according to the applicable Iraqi law, whose final judicial rulings have been ratified."
He added, “In order to formulate a comprehensive, indivisible, clear and transparent picture in the field of law enforcement, and to take into account human rights in all stages of legal and executive procedures, as well as independent judicial procedures, Prime Minister Muhammad Shiaa Al-Sudani directed the formation of a committee consisting of the Minister of Justice and an advisor.” The Prime Minister for Human Rights and the head of the Human Rights Department at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, a representative of the Presidency of the Republic, a representative of the Public Prosecution, and a representative of the Parliamentary Human Rights Committee as an observer, is responsible for preparing the government’s official documented response to what was stated in the High Commissioner’s report, and clarifying all aspects related to what It contains information and the sources from which the report draws its conclusions, including the overlapping chronological stages of the executed judicial rulings, which the report does not cover in its paragraphs.
He pointed out that "the government has adopted the path of implementing human rights principles, and adopting humanitarian standards in enforcing justice and implementing rulings in accordance with the law based on divine justice, and what our society has approved through its constitutional legislative institutions. We have continued with this principle, despite the extent of the crimes committed by terrorism against our people, and despite the brutal attacks that have claimed the lives of hundreds of thousands of innocent people, and set an unprecedented example of sophistication in crime and shedding the blood of the defenseless."
He continued, "The choice to adhere to the principles of human rights is a legitimate, moral and legal choice, which was confirmed in the government program, through a series of executive measures, directives and applications that strengthened the rule of law, supported the right of the accused to defense, the right of the victims and the general right of society to retribution according to the law."
