The US State Department announced a $5 million reward for information leading to the arrest or conviction of German citizen Ruja Ignatova on charges of selling a counterfeit cryptocurrency called OneCoin in 2014.
Ignatova, born in Bulgaria and nicknamed the “Lost Cryptoqueen,” was added to the FBI’s most wanted list in 2022 due to her involvement in money laundering and counterfeiting, and whose trace disappeared in Athens in 2017.
Earlier, the FBI offered a reward of $250,000, after which this amount was enhanced under the Transnational Organized Crime Rewards Program of the US State Department.
In turn, the Bulgarian judicial authorities announced that Ignatova, 43 years old, will face an indictment for her involvement in a fraud scheme using cryptocurrencies, which cost investors from all over the world about 4 billion dollars between 2014 and 2017.
"She will also be charged in absentia in our country, which will allow for the initiation of proceedings to confiscate her illegally acquired property," a Bulgarian official said.
For its part, the US government described OneCoin as one of the “largest fraudulent schemes” in world history. “Ignatova may have had plastic surgery.”
The FBI has suggested she may have visited Greece, the United Arab Emirates, Russia and Eastern Europe using her German passport and has altered her appearance with plastic surgery.
Ignatova was last seen on October 25, 2017, on a Ryanair flight from Sofia to Athens, reports said.
