Transportation: Five platforms nearing completion

The Ministry of Transport is preparing to complete all five berth projects in the Grand Faw Port, after the work rate exceeded 96 percent, while the operations of improving the depths and digging the navigation channels to receive giant ships and steamers continue.
The Director of the Ministry's Media Office, Maitham Al-Safi, told Al-Sabah that the five berth projects in the Grand Faw Port are proceeding at a steady and rapid pace towards achieving full completion on the scheduled date next October, as all casting works for the ten parts of the immersed tunnel have been completed, and the percentage of completion in the container yards has reached 76 percent and the road linking the port has reached 83 percent, while the percentage of completion of the excavation channel has reached 60 percent.
He pointed out that the excavation operations have been divided into several stages to reach a depth of 19.8 meters, which is the final depth of the navigation channel and the port basin, which makes it the leader of all Middle Eastern ports and stands at the forefront of global ports.
Al-Safi pointed out that the ministry is continuing to implement its strategy to increase the depth of the Khor Abdullah navigation channel due to the type of soils classified as among the worst in the world, and because Iraqi territorial waters and navigation channels are witnessing continuous sediments, which requires the implementation of continuous excavation works to ensure the safe passage of commercial ships, which helps ships to dock safely and receive larger vessels, which contributes to increasing commercial and maritime traffic in ports.
