Political analyst Issa Al-Adai confirmed today, Monday, July 15, 2024, that the establishment of a Sunni region in Iraq must enjoy internal and international consensus.
In an interview, Issa Al-Adai said regarding the formation of a Sunni region in Iraq, “The federal system is the internationally desired system, and it is one of the recognized systems of government for managing countries. It was approved in the Iraqi constitution of 2005, which was voted on by the Iraqis and supported by religious and political references.”
He added: “But the Sunni provinces, because of their true loyalty to the homeland and their belief that Iraq must remain one, rejected the constitution because of the issue of regions, as the prevailing understanding at the time was that establishing regions would lead to the division of Iraq, and it was not among our visions that Iraq would be divided into states and regions.”
He explained that “the regions project at that time received the support of the international system, and among its supporters was Joe Biden, when he was the US Vice President at the beginning of the occupation of Iraq, who supported the project of forming the three regions in Iraq.”
He pointed out that “the Sunni component in Iraq at that time opposed the division of the country on the basis of components (Sunni, Shiite and Kurdish), and despite all the difficult circumstances that Iraq went through, we witnessed the successful experience of the Kurdistan Region, where this experience achieved security, development, economic and urban construction, and services were provided through a cohesive political, economic and security system.”
When asked about the obstacles facing the establishment of a Sunni region in Iraq, Al-Adai stressed that “the region needs local requirements within the component, and there must be political and social consensus on the issue of establishing the region, in addition to national consensus at the Iraqi level, and this consensus must be present and existing.”
He considered that "the regional system also has a role in establishing a Sunni region in Iraq, in addition to the necessity of an international resolution from influential countries at the global level and in the UN Security Council to support this region. However, all these requirements have not yet been achieved, as there is no internal, national, regional, or international consensus to establish this region."
He explained that “the developments witnessed by the Kurdistan Region and the political, economic and service situation achieved therein created enemies for it in the region, as regional parties moved their arms inside the country to undermine this experience.”
He stressed that "if it were not for the international resolution guaranteeing the Kurdistan Region, and the constitutional requirements and articles that approved this region, the situation would be different now."
He pointed out that "the success of the Kurdistan Region raises concerns among others, as happened in the provinces when the Anbar province administration succeeded in rebuilding and building it, and arranging the political and security situation, which did not please many parties."
