    [size=45]Member of the Coordination Framework, Imran Karkoush, commented on the appointment of Mohammed Al-Hassan from the Sultanate of Oman as Head of the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI).[/size]
    [size=45]"We welcome this step, which reflects an international understanding of the situation in Iraq, and building a good, balanced and non-provocative relationship with the United Nations," Karkoush said.[/size]
    [size=45]He believed that "the presence of an Arab figure in this position restores hope for greater positive interaction between the two parties."[/size]
    [size=45]Earlier today, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres announced the appointment of Mohammed Al-Hassan of the Sultanate of Oman as Head of the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI), replacing Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert.[/size]
    [size=45]Al Hassan brings to the position a broad range of diplomatic experience with a career spanning more than thirty years in preventive diplomacy, peacebuilding and development.[/size]
    [size=45]The new envoy most recently served as the Permanent Representative of the Sultanate of Oman to the United Nations in New York (since 2019), and prior to that held various positions at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Muscat, including Acting Undersecretary for Diplomatic Affairs (2016), Head of the Diwan (2015), and Head of the Minister’s Office Department (2012).[/size]
    [size=45]Among many high-level positions, Al Hassan has served as Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Sultanate of Oman to the Russian Federation and concurrently as Non-Resident Ambassador to Belarus, Ukraine, Armenia and Moldova.[/size]
    [size=45]He previously served as Deputy Permanent Representative of the Sultanate of Oman to the United Nations in New York. Prior to that, he served as Deputy Permanent Representative of Oman to the United Nations in Geneva.[/size]
    [size=45]Al-Hassan holds a BA in Political Science from the University of Washington in Seattle, USA, a Master of Science in International Relations from St. John’s University in New York, USA, and a PhD in Economics from Moscow State University of Economics, Statistics and Informatics (MESI) in Moscow, Russia. He speaks Arabic, English, Norwegian and Russian.[/size]
