    Baghdad Today-Baghdad
MP Yasser Al-Husseini considered, today, Saturday (July 20, 2024), that the real agenda of the Turkish invasion of the lands of the Kurdistan Region and some areas of northern Iraq will not end with the violation of the Kurdistan Workers' Party, noting that it is linked to the end of the "Treaty of Lausanne."
Al-Husseini said in an interview with Baghdad Today, "Last June, the Turkish forces began a wide-scale invasion that included 6-7 areas within the borders of Dohuk, most notably the surroundings of Amadiyah, the mountains of Karah and Matin, and others," considering that "the Turkish forces are exploiting the political weakness in Baghdad and waving the water card to increase pressure to prevent any reaction, even if it is political."
He added, "The Turkish invasion is linked to the end of the Lausanne Agreement, which defined the features of the Middle East and the borders of countries," noting that "Ankara allocates an annual declared budget for what it calls the restoration of areas that it believes must be part of the greater Turkish map, including Nineveh and Kirkuk, and what is happening is not a secret, but rather exists and is announced in the Turkish media."
He pointed out that "even if the Kurdistan Workers' Party ends and becomes a thing of the past, Turkey will not withdraw from any inch it has taken control of by force of arms, and it will not stop at the walls of Dohuk, but will move to Nineveh and then Kirkuk, where the oil and gas sources are."
He continued, "The Workers' Party is just a pretext for more invasions that are launched from time to time, and it is similar to a policy of nibbling away at land in order to achieve goals, no matter how long it takes. This is what must be noted, that what is happening in Dohuk and other areas is not fighting an opposition party, but rather re-imposing control."
The Turkish side says that its operations in the Kurdistan Region aim to create a buffer zone free of the Kurdistan Workers' Party and at a depth of 40 kilometers, pointing out that the military operations taking place were coordinated and conducted by a joint operations room with the Iraqi security forces, and are part of a set of memoranda of understanding and agreements signed between Al-Sudani and Erdogan during his visit to Iraq a few months ago.
The Treaty of Lausanne is a treaty signed in 1923 that defined the Turkish borders after the end of World War I and the disintegration of the Ottoman Empire. The Treaty of Lausanne and its terms expired 100 years after it was signed, during the past year 2023.
