Minister of Electricity, Ziad Ali Fadhil, announced on Sunday the details of the joint line between Iraq and Turkey, indicating that the line includes Iraq supplying Turkey with energy, while he pointed out that the Rutba district abandoned private generators after the opening of the Iraqi-Jordanian line.
Fadhel said in a statement reported by the official news agency, and reviewed by "Al-Eqtisad News", that "the Iraqi-Turkish electrical interconnection line is a strategic project that represents a qualitative leap in the field of strengthening the national electricity grid, by linking it with the international grid via Turkey and the European Union," indicating that "this line, also known as the (Jazira-Kask 400 kV) line, is one of the projects that have been stalled for nearly 20 years."
He added, "Today, we have achieved tangible progress in completing this strategic project, which extends 115 kilometers, from inside Turkish territory, passing through Dohuk Governorate and reaching Nineveh," noting that "it represents an electrical bridge linking the electricity grids in the two countries."
He stressed that "the staff of the General Company for Energy Transmission in the Northern Region worked hard and sincerely to achieve important accomplishments within a record period of time."
He stated that "the most prominent of these achievements are:
- Establishing a railway station in Nineveh Governorate with a voltage of 400 kV.
- Extending new lines with a voltage of 132 kV.
- Replacing the wires of the 132 kV Kask-Tal Afar line with ultra-fine thermal wires.
He explained, "There were long discussions with the Turkish side, and we reached a joint agreement that guarantees the exchange of energy in a way that meets the needs of both countries, as Turkey will provide Iraq with 300 megawatts in the summer, while Iraq will provide Turkey with 150 megawatts during the rest of the year from its surplus energy," noting that "this line will contribute greatly to supporting the provision of energy to the governorates of Nineveh, Kirkuk and Salah al-Din, and will also enable us to maneuver loads and transfer energy to the capital and the southern governorates when needed."
He stressed that "the ministry achieved two achievements in the electrical interconnection sector with neighboring countries during the year thanks to the support, the first is the opening of the electrical interconnection line with Jordan last March, as the Rutba district has now abandoned private generators and now enjoys stable electricity," noting that "We are working on launching the second phase of the project, to include the rest of the Anbar regions."
He explained that "these achievements, which were made in record time, came thanks to the support that the Ministry of Electricity received from Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani and his provision of the necessary financial allocations to implement strategic projects and reactivate previously stalled projects," noting that "we are anticipating the completion of the electrical connection between Iraq and Kuwait by the end of this year and then the connection with Saudi Arabia within the Gulf Electrical Interconnection Agreement, so that Iraq can complete its communication with the regional energy system and allow it the freedom to diversify and exchange in electrical load conditions."
