    Baghdad Today - Baghdad
Minister of Electricity, Ziad Ali Fadhil, confirmed today, Sunday (July 21, 2024), that the Iraqi-Turkish electricity connection line is a qualitative leap for the national grid, noting that Iraq will also supply Turkey with electricity and that Rutba has "abandoned" private generators.
Fadhel said in a statement to the official agency, followed by "Baghdad Today", that "the Iraqi-Turkish electrical connection line represents a qualitative leap in the field of strengthening the national electricity grid and linking it with the international grid via Turkey and the European Union," indicating that "Turkey will supply Iraq with 300 megawatts in the summer, while Iraq will supply Turkey with 150 megawatts during the rest of the year from its surplus energy."
He added, "The ministry has achieved two accomplishments in one year in the electricity interconnection sector with neighboring countries, the first being the Jordan line and now the interconnection line with Turkey. We are awaiting the end of this year to complete the electricity interconnection between Iraq and Kuwait and then the interconnection with Saudi Arabia within the Gulf electricity interconnection agreement."
He pointed out that one of the results of the electrical connection with neighboring countries is that "Rutba district has abandoned private generators and now enjoys stable electricity after the Iraqi-Jordanian electrical connection."
Earlier today, Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani inaugurated, via a television circuit, the Iraqi-Turkish electricity connection line, via the Kask station west of Mosul, to supply the northern region.
The Prime Minister's media office said in a statement received by "Baghdad Today" that "Al-Sudani inaugurated the Iraqi-Turkish electricity connection line, via the Kask station west of Mosul, to supply the northern region, with a capacity of 300 megawatts, in the presence of the Minister of Electricity, Ziad Ali Fadhil."
Al-Sudani appreciated "the efforts made by the Ministry of Electricity's crews, especially those working in the General Company for Electricity Transmission/Northern Region, in completing this project that has been stalled since 2004, after it was completed through continuous work in constructing secondary stations, transmission lines, and understandings with the Turkish side," according to the statement.
The Prime Minister pointed out "the importance of establishing a connection that extends to the Turkish network, and from there to the European side, which is a strategic option for energy in the future, and comes within the vision of the government program for connection with neighboring countries, in preparation for connection before the end of this year with the Gulf Electricity Interconnection Authority, so that Iraq can complete its communication with the regional energy system in a way that allows for diversity and exchange in various conditions of peak electrical loads," according to the statement.
The statement confirmed that "the project included the construction of the Kask transformer station (400 kV), and the use of ultra-fine thermal wires for the first time in the construction of the 115 km long line, as well as extending the (132 kV) line to Tal Afar, and installing voltage stabilization capacitors. The line will allow the transfer of 300 megawatts from Turkey to Iraq to supply the governorates of Nineveh, Salah al-Din, and Kirkuk during increased loads."
