Mustafa Hamid, Media Director of the Mine Action Department at the Ministry of Environment, said, “The mine clearance file is proceeding according to the strategy approved for the year 2023-2028,” noting that “the remaining contaminated area amounts to more than 2,000 square kilometers throughout Iraq, out of 6,600 square kilometers after 2003.”
He added, "The governorates that currently have contaminated areas are (Basra, Diyala, Babylon, Anbar), and there are limited areas contaminated with cluster munitions in (Muthanna, Maysan, Dhi Qar, Wasit)", indicating that "the tasks of the Mine Action Department in the ministry focus on supervising and monitoring the work of the executive bodies."
