Baghdad/Al-Masala: Relations between Iraq and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) have witnessed remarkable development recently, with a focus on strengthening strategic cooperation between the two sides.
This comes at a time when Iraq faces complex security challenges, including the threat of terrorism, and the need to build security institutions capable of ensuring long-term stability.
In this context, NATO announced the launch of a high-level “political dialogue” with Iraq in Brussels, with the aim of strengthening the partnership between the two sides and developing cooperation mechanisms to achieve common goals.
NATO announced the launch of a high-level political dialogue with Iraq, which comes based on the long-standing partnership between the two parties.
This dialogue aims to strengthen strategic cooperation between NATO and Iraq, and demonstrates the alliance’s commitment to supporting Iraq in the areas of security and counter-terrorism. The announcement was made during a visit by a high-level Iraqi delegation headed by National Security Advisor Qasim al-Araji to the alliance’s headquarters in Brussels, where the delegation held talks with senior NATO officials.

The role of NATO mission in Iraq

Since 2018, NATO Mission Iraq has been operating at the request of the Iraqi authorities to advise and develop capabilities for Iraqi security institutions.
This advisory role aims to enhance security and prevent the return of ISIS, and includes providing support to build more sustainable, effective and inclusive Iraqi armed forces and security institutions.
According to NATO Assistant Secretary General for Operations Tom Gouves, these efforts are being undertaken with full respect for Iraq's sovereignty and territorial integrity.

    Strategic Partnership

During his visit to Brussels, Iraqi National Security Advisor Qasim Al-Araji stressed the true and long-term partnership between Iraq and NATO, emphasizing that this partnership is not directed against any party, but rather aims to achieve security and stability in Iraq by providing advice and building the capacity of the Iraqi security forces. He also stressed that the NATO mission in Iraq is an advisory mission, not a combat mission.

Deepening cooperation in the Middle East

The report quoted NATO's Deputy Assistant Secretary General for Political and Security Affairs, Javier Colomina, as saying that NATO and Iraq have a common interest in a stable and secure Middle East.
He pointed out that the launch of the political dialogue comes as part of the ongoing efforts to enhance cooperation between the two parties in the region, adding that Colomina will be a focal point for NATO in the Southern Neighbourhood, where it will work to coordinate and enhance the alliance's vision in the region.

    NATO Action Plan

At the recent NATO Summit in Washington, Allies agreed on an action plan to increase NATO’s engagement in the Middle East, North Africa and the Sahel. The appointment of the Special Representative is part of this plan to strengthen engagement with partners and achieve regional security.
