Freedoms are not only an individual right, but also a necessary mechanism to guide the course of governance towards true democracy and active citizenship. They are considered an essential part of the components of good governance, the system that allows people to participate in making decisions that affect their lives, and guarantees them transparency, accountability and the rule of law. This type of governance can only be achieved in an environment in which individuals enjoy basic rights and freedoms, such as freedom of expression, freedom of assembly and freedom of the press.

The relationship between freedoms and good governance is evident in the freedom of expression that enables individuals to discuss and criticize government policies and present alternatives, which contributes to improving government performance and ensuring that the needs of society are met. Through the rule of law, good governance guarantees the rights and freedoms of individuals in accordance with the laws, which enhances confidence in the legal system and prevents tyranny. In addition to all of this, good governance based on respect for freedoms enhances political and economic stability, which contributes to achieving sustainable development and social justice. Therefore, it can be said that freedoms and good governance are two complementary elements, and one cannot be fully achieved without the other.

The National Union is well aware that establishing and preserving freedoms is indeed one of the essential foundations for correcting the path of individualism towards achieving true citizenship and good governance. When individuals are able to freely express their opinions and ideas, this contributes to creating a political and social environment characterized by pluralism and inclusiveness. Through free expression, individuals, civil society and the media can play a monitoring role, forcing governments or parties to improve their performance and adhere to the principles of good governance.

When the National Union adheres to the strategy of correcting the path towards good governance, this means that establishing and preserving freedoms is at the heart of its tasks and its sound approach, and that its differences and disagreements with the party are based on the absence of the concept of freedoms and partnership in administration and decision-making through the policy of exclusivity and domination of this party. If the National Union had not been concerned and keen on establishing freedoms and good governance, it would not have differed with the Democratic Party on how to manage, so that the region would now have a bad reputation regarding freedoms, human rights and governance.

Even among our party’s competitors, there is a firm belief about the space for freedoms and human rights under the PUK’s administration, so that this strategy becomes the identity and characteristic of the PUK. They asked a university professor “from another party” about the secret of the free space in Sulaymaniyah, and he said: “Let me correct the phrase for you, wherever the PUK rules, you find freedoms guaranteed for everyone.”

Our commitment to correcting the course of government is at the heart of our keenness to establish freedoms and citizenship, and our struggle will continue for this purpose despite the difficulties and obstacles.
