Iraq plans to establish modern industrial cities amid challenges of electricity and corruption!

In light of the economic challenges facing Iraq, the government announced an ambitious plan to establish modern industrial cities based on advanced technologies, with the aim of diversifying the economy and stimulating local industrial production. This announcement comes at a time when Iraq is suffering from deteriorating electricity services and increasing corruption files, which has led to delays in the implementation of many vital projects in the country.
These industrial cities aim to attract foreign investment and provide a suitable environment for industrial companies that rely on modern technology. The government is working in cooperation with international partners to develop these cities to be able to achieve international standards in production and quality, which will contribute to relieving pressure on the oil sector, on which the Iraqi economy depends to a large extent.
But these plans face significant challenges, as power outages continue to negatively impact existing industries, in addition to a lack of funding, due to limited financial allocations and declining government revenues. Moreover, rampant corruption in government sectors has delayed many projects, wasted resources and eroded confidence in government administration.
Despite these difficulties, the Iraqi government hopes that the new industrial cities will create jobs and stimulate the local economy, in addition to improving infrastructure and basic services in the surrounding areas. However, the success of these plans will depend to a large extent on the government’s ability to address corruption, improve energy services, and provide the necessary financing to implement the projects on time.
For its part, the Industrial Cities Authority at the Ministry of Industry intends to establish 4 modern industrial cities with advanced technological models.
The head of the authority, Hamid Awad Muhammad, stated in an interview with the official newspaper that “new projects with distinguished specializations will begin work next year.”
He added that “the list includes the Babylon City for Medical and Pharmaceutical Industries, the Al-Tayeb Smart Industrial City, the Diyala Industrial City, and the Kirkuk City.”
In addition, the economic expert, Samir Al-Alwani, said that “the project to establish modern industrial cities in Iraq is an important step towards diversifying the economy and reducing dependence on oil as a primary source of income. However, Al-Alwani expressed his reservations about the ability to implement these projects under the current circumstances in Iraq, especially in the areas of energy and finance.”
He explained that “the continued deterioration of electricity services represents a major obstacle to any industrial development, as these cities need a strong and sustainable infrastructure to ensure their efficient operation,” noting that “reliance on modern technology requires huge investments in the energy sector to provide reliable energy sources, which is something Iraq is currently suffering from due to the shortcomings in the electricity sector.”
He stressed that “the lack of financial allocations may lead to delays or reductions in the size of these projects, especially in light of the increasing corruption files that cause waste of resources and slow down the development process,” indicating that “even if there is political will to implement these projects, their success requires a transparent investment environment and radical reforms in the administrative system to reduce corruption.”
The economic expert continued, “There is a real possibility of achieving these plans if the focus is on fundamental reforms, especially in the field of energy and combating corruption, in addition to searching for international partnerships that contribute to financing these projects and providing the necessary technological expertise.”
