Minister of Planning, Mohammed Ali Tamim, stated that the ministry is proceeding with conducting the population census in order to draw a new map of the population reality in Iraq.
Tamim said in a speech during the first national conference to improve human capital in Iraq, "We have moved forward to draw a new map of the population reality in Iraq, by conducting the population census next November."
He added, "The population census will provide a comprehensive and complete database on the demographic reality, and chart paths for human capital development, according to a sound development vision based on accurate statistical data."
Tamim also stressed that “the Ministry of Planning began a year ago to conduct one of the most important statistical surveys, which is the economic and social survey of the family in Iraq, and it will provide important results on poverty, spending levels, and other things.”
He pointed out that the census data and the results of the economic survey will serve Iraq's vision to achieve sustainable development goals and improve human capital.
The Minister of Planning continued, saying, “Our responsibility requires us to determine funding priorities for investment projects related to human capital and to diversify the sources of this funding, which has become an urgent necessity with limited resources.”
Earlier, the Federal Ministry of Planning announced detailed statistics on the population of Iraq in 2023.
The ministry’s spokesman, Abdul Zahra Al-Hindawi, said in a statement that “the population of Iraq at the end of last year 2023 was estimated at (43) million and (324) thousand people,” indicating that “the percentage of urban residents reached (69.9) percent, and the percentage of rural residents was (30.1) percent.”
Al-Hindawi explained that “the percentage of the population under the age of (15) years reached (40) percent of the total population, while the percentage of the population in the age group (15-64) years reached (57) percent.”
He pointed out that “the percentage of the population aged (65 years) and over reached (3) percent, while the economic activity rate of the population aged (15 years and over) reached (40) percent, in addition to the percentage of economically active males reaching (87) percent, and the percentage of economically active females reaching (13) percent.”
Al-Hindawi added, "The inflation rate decreased to (4.4) percent in 2023, compared to a rate of (6.1) percent in 2021, and a rate of (4.9) percent in 2022."
Iraq was unable to conduct a population census after 2003 for reasons mostly related to political aspects, as well as disagreements over attempts to classify Iraqis into ethnic and sectarian components through the census.
