“Hidden Terrorism”: How Cyber Weakness Threatens Iraq’s Future More Than Bullets?

Iraq faces a double threat to its security and stability: terrorism and cyber attacks. As the country continues to combat terrorist groups such as ISIS, concerns are growing about the deteriorating situation in the cyber domain.
Iraq suffers from a weak digital infrastructure, which makes it an easy target for cyber attacks targeting state institutions, banks, and major companies.
Cybersecurity experts point out that the risk posed by vulnerability in this area can sometimes be as great as, or even greater than, the threat of terrorism. In today’s world, attacks are no longer carried out solely with physical force; cyberattacks have become an essential part of the toolkit of terrorist groups and cybercriminals. These attacks can disrupt communications systems, steal sensitive data, and even paralyze critical infrastructure such as electricity, water, and hospitals.
The cyber threat is particularly serious because attacks are often carried out remotely and using advanced methods that make them difficult to detect or counter. Iraq’s poor digital awareness and inadequate protection make it even more difficult to counter these attacks.
On the other hand, the threat of terrorism remains a constant danger to Iraq, but it has become tangible and visible on the ground, while cyber attacks may be hidden, but their impact may be devastating at the system level.
The current challenge is that Iraq needs more advanced strategies to protect its digital infrastructure and enhance cyber awareness among its institutions and citizens, in order to confront this growing threat, the danger of which is increasing day by day, and places the country in a new confrontation that may be as dangerous as the battle against terrorism.
For his part, the leader of the Coordination Framework, Adi Abdul Hadi, confirmed that the weakness in cybersecurity measures in Iraq is equivalent to the danger of terrorism.
Abdul Hadi said, “The developments taking place in the communications system and platforms and the emergence of artificial intelligence require urgent measures on the ground to enhance the principle of cybersecurity in Iraq, especially since the country suffers from a real and significant weakness in this regard.”
He pointed out that “this weakness creates major loopholes that could be exploited by enemies in spying, eavesdropping and exploiting many resources,” indicating that “many countries have realized the danger of cybersecurity as it represents an internal threat with several dimensions, and its impact and dimensions are equivalent to the danger of terrorism, especially since it has begun to be used in wars in monitoring, assassinations and identifying specific targets.”
He pointed out the need for “a supreme committee at the country level to undertake the task of enhancing cybersecurity, especially since all government departments and institutions have confidential sites and data that must be protected from any discrepancies or theft. Therefore, cybersecurity is a top priority that must be paid attention to.”
It is worth noting that “cybersecurity is in the position of defensive programs that protect the websites and information of ministries and institutions from any theft or hacking, and it is very necessary, especially with the development of programs that hack many websites.”
